Design A Website In A Day?
Design a website in a day?
I set up a website to highlight my design skills and case studies separate from my design services site.
My Adobe Portfolio Platform Observations:
I’ve worked with Squarespace sites for more than 10 years, but have also worked with WordPress and Wix.
Adobe Portfolio platform is not as intuitive as some platforms and has way less design options but I think it serves its purpose to highlight one's brand identity skills.
The menus aren’t as nested as Wix, which simplified the process. There were not as many templates to choose from as SquareSpace but that also made it pretty straightforward for my purpose of showcasing projects.
I had to come up with some tech and formatting workarounds but that is true of all tempated sites. Design skills make template site challenges manageable without getting into CSS and basic code. I was surprised that simple things like sizing graphics was less flexible so I had to go into Illustrator to re-export files at a different size to make them fit properly (another unspoken reason you hire a good designer to help with your website is they not only make it look good but function well too). I’m happy with the result and the ease of adding and turning off pages so I don’t have to delete them. In SquareSpace you can’t really turn pages off … you just can't go directly to the page unless they know the exact URL.
If you are already paying for Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Portfolio is free, which was about what I wanted to spend right now. You can also add a custom domain if you want but I’m fine with http://pattiemcnab.myportfolio.com since I have a this site for Teal Studio design services. I just wish they dropped the “my” in myportfolio.
If anyone is looking for good ol’ geeky chat about website formats for your next project, reach out to me!
And please send me feedback about the new site, thanks!
